5 Tips for Styling Numbers
5 Tips for Styling Numbers 5 Tips for Styling Numbers 5 Tips for Styling Numbers By Mark Nichol Underneath youll locate a bunch of tips about proper utilization of numbers in different settings. 1. Cash Secluded, easygoing references to measures of cash of one hundred dollars or less or one hundred pennies or less are typically explained (ââ¬Å"I made more than fifty dollars in one afternoonâ⬠; ââ¬Å"Remember when a treat cost twenty-five cents?â⬠). Sums over those cutoff points are for the most part styled with numerals and a dollar sign, as are littler sums when more than one sum is recorded and in any event one is not exactly a hundred dollars (ââ¬Å"The seat cost $237, and the table was $89â⬠). At the point when measures of not exactly and in excess of a dollar are consolidated, use dollar signs and figures all things considered too (ââ¬Å"The sticker prices read ââ¬Ë$0.75ââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ë$1.25ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ). Various occurrences of money related figure require the utilization of numerals by and large, yet bigger adjusted figures might be explained, in any event, when conflicting with exact dollar figures (ââ¬Å"I made more than fifty thousand dollars just because a year ago: $51,500.â⬠) Numbers in the millions and higher significant degrees might be in joined numeral and illuminated structure (ââ¬Å"The venture was planned at $2.5 millionâ⬠). 2. Numerals toward the Beginning of a Sentence Sentences ought to never start with a numeral; either illuminate the number (ââ¬Å"Two thousand eleven was the year the business turned a profitâ⬠) or recast the sentence (ââ¬Å"The business originally turned a benefit in 2011â⬠). Another alternative is to go before the number with the expression ââ¬Å"The year,â⬠however doing so acquaints irregularity if each reference with a year, paying little mind to position in a sentence, doesn't follow a redundancy of the expression; that arrangement is likewise clumsy. 3. Number Ranges En runs (or hyphens, utilized instead of en runs on many Web destinations) are utilized in number ranges for instance, to show life length, long periods of rule or years in office, athletic or aesthetic seasons, or page goes as an option to ââ¬Å"from x to yâ⬠or ââ¬Å"from x through y.â⬠An en run ought not be utilized with the word from. (Erroneous: ââ¬Å"He ruled from 1863-1895â⬠; right: ââ¬Å"He ruled from 1863 to 1895â⬠or ââ¬Å"He ruled 1863-1895â⬠). A similar rule applies for the word between: ââ¬Å"Between 250 and 300 individuals attended,â⬠not ââ¬Å"Between 250-300 individuals attended,â⬠is right. 4. Superscript Numerous essayists submit original copies that include the letters in ordinal numerals in superscript structure that is, st, nd, rd, and th raised over the fontââ¬â¢s pattern. This structure is only from time to time required when adhering to the style decide that numbers are illuminated up to one hundred, however when ordinals are required (ââ¬Å"The strip read ââ¬Ë1st Placeââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ; ââ¬Å"the 101st Airborne Divisionâ⬠), they ought to be on the benchmark, not raised. Directions for how to change superscript ordinals to benchmark ordinals are accessible through an online inquiry. Additionally, when a date is composed, the ordinal structure is superfluous; essentially compose ââ¬Å"January 1,â⬠not ââ¬Å"January 1st.â⬠(without the month, the date ought to be explained: ââ¬Å"Her answer followed on the twenty-first.â⬠If a publicationââ¬â¢s number style is to illuminate numbers just to ten, the structure indicated her applies: ââ¬Å"Her answer followed on the 21st.â⬠5. The Plural of Zero In Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s Collegiate Dictionary, zeros is the first of two choices for the plural of zero. The other, obviously, is zeroes. The primary decision isn't the predominant one; it is recorded first essentially in light of the fact that it is more straightforward. In any case, numerous editors follow a show that, for consistency, the dictionaryââ¬â¢s first of more than one choices is the standard with the exception of when the inclination for another is arranged in the house style manage. In this manner, zeros is commonly the right style. Note, in any case, that the right spelling of the current state action word structure meaning ââ¬Å"focusesâ⬠or ââ¬Å"aimsâ⬠is zeroes (ââ¬Å"Disregarding the seeking after planes, he zeroes in on his targetâ⬠). If youâre lucky, you might get 5-10 comments and likes but if you arenât, your posts would seem quite âlonelyâ. This doesnt look good for your profile especially if your Facebook account is a fanpage for your business. So Just How Do You Garner More Likes And Comments?Having more friends on Facebook might not be the solution if you just dont know how to engage your friends/fans, so letâs see what you can do to get more interests in your status updates:1. Post in the mornings and eveningsSeveral studies conduc ted have revealed that these are the times that people are the most likely to check their Facebook, most probably upon arrival at the office before the start of a new day or after dinner and a shower.Of course, common sense tells you too that posting in the middle of the night is unlikely to get you far as your posts would have been pushed down the newsfeed by other posts when morning comes.2. Comment on othersâ statuses tooBy regularly interacting with your friends, a bond is formed and they would be more likely to check out your pages as well as state their views on your posts. Else, some would be obliged to return the favor if you have been regularly commenting on their posts. This explains the close-knit community that bloggers form; they regularly check and comment on each otherâs blogs.3. Ask for opinionsIt doesnt have to be real-world issues like âHow would the greenhouse effect affect you?â People turn to Facebook to unwind, so asking such a question is unlikely to g et you your desired response. Your question could be something fun like âShould I buy that $3,000 bag or an iPad?â Simple but good enough to get some answers!4. Stay relevantThis is targeted at those who have business fan pages. Make sure your posts are always relevant to what you do; after all, fans connected with you for a reason. It is OK to post happenings or news once in a while but if your personal photos and Youtube videos start appearing often, then you should remind yourself of your pageâs objective.READ7 Tips To Tweet Your Way To The Bank5. Post more photosAnalysis of Facebook activities have indicated that photos are the contents that garnered the most likes and comments as compared to status updates, videos and links. It is easy; just ask yourself which would grab your attention easier?Youâd need to read status updates, watch the videos and click on links, which are definitely more tedious than looking at a photo, right? Photos tend to be more interesting too, jus t as the saying âA picture says a thousand wordsâ.6. Ask people to like your contentsSometimes, asking the obvious is the best way to get things done! After posting a short status or photo, add âLike my photo if you think I rock!âIt is amazing that you would get more likes by actually asking out loud for people to do so. You would have received at some time a request asking you to vote for a friendâs photo submitted for a contest. What did you do? You voted, right?7. Ask for help/tipsPeople are bound to help a damsel (or dude) in distress if they could. People also love to show off that they know something! So the next time you canât figure out how to get to a place or need to locate a book, just ask on Facebook if anyone can help.8. Tease or challengeDont you think you are likely to reply to a friend who posted âI did 10km in 32 minutes, can you? ??â Do you remember the time that the diamond-popping game, Bejeweled, was the craze? We could send invites to our friend s challenging them to beat our score. No one likes to be challenged, so say something to taunt them! These are the 8 simple ways how you can get more people to like and comment on your Facebook status. Whichever method you choose, remember that moderation is the key, so dont overdo your postings, taunts, challenges and questions.Your friends are likely to find you annoying if you âblastâ them with endless questions and challenges and might âunfriendâ you, defeating your very purpose!

Highlights of Late 19th Century Womens Labor Organizing
Some highlights of American womens labor organizing in the late 19th century: â⬠¢ In 1863, a committee in New York City, organized by the editor of the New York Sun, began to help women collect wages due them that had not been paid. This organization continued for fifty years. â⬠¢ Also in 1863, women in Troy, New York, organized the Collar Laundry Union. These women worked in laundries making and laundering the detachable collars stylish on mens shirts. They went on strike, and as a result won an increase in wages. In 1866, their strike fund was used to aid the Iron Molders Union, building a lasting relationship with that mens union. The leader of the laundryworkers union, Kate Mullaney, went on to become assistant secretary of the National Labor Union. The Collar Laundry Union dissolved July 31, 1869, in the the middle of another strike, faced with the threat of paper collars and the likely loss of their jobs. â⬠¢ The National Labor Union was organized in 1866; while not exclusively focusing on womens issues, it did take a stand for the rights of working women. â⬠¢ The first two national unions to admit women were the Cigarmakers (1867) and the Printers (1869). â⬠¢ Susan B. Anthony used her paper, The Revolution, to help working women organize in their own interests. One such organization formed in 1868, and became known as the Working Womens Association. Active in this organization was Augusta Lewis, a typographer who kept the organization focused on representing the women on pay and working conditions, and kept the organization out of political issues such as woman suffrage. â⬠¢ Miss Lewis became the president of the Womens Typographical Union No. 1 which grew out of the Working Womens Association. In 1869, this local union applied for membership in the national Typographers Union, and Miss Lewis was made corresponding secretary of the union. She married Alexander Troup, the unions secretary-treasurer, in 1874, and retired from the union, though not from other reform work. Womens Local 1 did not long survive the loss of its organizing leader, and dissolved in 1878. After that time, the Typographers admitted women on an equal basis to men, instead of organizing separate womens locals. â⬠¢ In 1869, a group of women shoestitchers in Lynn, Massachusetts, organized the Daughters of St. Crispin, a national womens labor organization modeled on and supported by the Knights of St. Crispin, the national shoe workers union, which also went on record supporting equal pay for equal work. The Daughters of St. Crispin is recognized as the first national union of women. The first president of the Daughters of St. Crispin was Carrie Wilson. When the Daughters of St. Crispin went on strike in Baltimore in 1871, the Knights of St. Crispin successfully demanded that the women strikers be rehired. The depression in the 1870s led to the demise of the Daughters of St. Crispin in 1876. â⬠¢ The Knights of Labor, organized in 1869, began admitting women in 1881. In 1885, the Knights of Labor established the Womens Work Department. Leonora Barry was hired as a full time organizer and investigator. The Womens Work Department was dissolved in 1890. â⬠¢ Alzina Parsons Stevens, a typographer and, at one time, Hull House resident, organized the Working Womans Union No. 1 in 1877. In 1890, she was elected district master workman, District Assembly 72, Knights of Labor, in Toledo, Ohio. â⬠¢ Mary Kimball Kehew joined the Womens Educational and Industrial Union in 1886, becoming a director in 1890 and president in 1892. With Mary Kenney OSullivan, she organized the Union for Industrial Progress, whose purpose was to help women organize craft unions. This was a forerunner of the Womens Trade Union League, founded in the early 20th century. Mary Kenney OSullivan was the first woman hired by the American Federation of Labor (AFL) as an organizer. She had earlier organized women bookbinders in Chicago into the AFL and had been elected a delegate to the Chicago Trades and Labor Assembly. â⬠¢ In 1890, Josephine Shaw Lowell organized the Consumers League of New York. In 1899, the New York organization helped found the National Consumers League to protect both workers and consumers. Florence Kelley led this organization, which worked mainly through educational effort. Text copyright à © Jone Johnson Lewis . World Currency free essay sample
For as long as man-kind has been around, there has always been some way for us to make deals or barter. Whether it was trading animal pelts or meats, to gold this system had always been around. Through the centuries our way of bartering has changed and adapted many times until we have our world currencies of today. Currency is defined as ââ¬Å"the means of purchasing through trade.â⬠Today currency is seen as printed or minted money, sometimes with the inclusion of coins. Currency is what we use to exchange good or services for cash.(Wisegeek) A lot of people confuse currency with money, but they are not the same. Money is unreal, imaginary, it is an idea. Currency is what we use to back up the idea of what we think money is. Paper bills and metal coins are currency, not money, though that is what we tend to call them. We will write a custom essay sample on World Currency or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The amount of currency in circulation all depends on the amount of money in the countyââ¬â¢s economy (Money vs. Currency). A country should not have more currency than money. Through out time many different types of currencies have been used. The first form of a money-like exchange was done in China with cowry shells. This method of exchange came about around 12 B.C. By the time 1000 B.C. rolled around, the Chinese had created mock cowry shells in the form of metal; this was the first use of coins as a form of currency. The first forms of paper currency were also used in China, but due to an over abundance of it, it quickly vanished (The History of Money). The next time paper currency was used was in the European countries. Through time each country has adopted their own individual currency. Japan has the Yen, the United Kingdom has the Pound, and the United States has the Dollar. Each currency is worth a different amount. To compare one countryââ¬â¢s currency worth to anotherââ¬â¢s is called an exchange rate. In Japan One Yen is worth a different amount than One Penny. That same Penny is worth a different amount than One British Pound. No country ââ¬â¢s currency is worth the same as anotherââ¬â¢s. Money and Currency are a very important part of our world. We basically cannot do anything without them. They have come a long way through out the centuries and maybe still have a longer way to go. The currency of the future is already here today. One thing it is safe to say about them is that no matter how they change, they will always be around. Work Cited msn Money. Essay the world that was against me
Essay the world that was against me Essay the world that was against me The World that was Against Me Everyday itââ¬â¢s the same old thing I wake up, go to a school filled with people who think I am nothing, go home, eat maybe, and go to bed. Even though I hate going to school due to the fact that I am bullied and bruised. I would rather go to school and escape for 8 hours, than be at home. Nobody sees the pain, and the scars I have. That I feel. I put a smile on everyday so everyone thinks Iââ¬â¢m fine with it. But Iââ¬â¢m NOT! Every morning when I wake up, and every night before I fall asleep I say to me ââ¬Å"tomorrow will be different.â⬠Then I laugh. What is a 14-year-old frail girl going to do? Itââ¬â¢s not like I can stand up to the big bullies. They would demolish me. And what am I supposed to do at home? They are all bigger and much stronger than I am. Plus they are family. Iââ¬â¢m not supposed to be mean to them even if they are to me. Do you know what today is? Itââ¬â¢s Friday, and that means tomorrow is the weekend. That is a whole 48 hours I am to spend with my family. I was not looking forward to that as I started to tear a little. But I canââ¬â¢t focus on that. I need to prepare myself for the day that is here. Today is another typical day. I wake up, get ready, but today it was extremly cold out and they made me walk. I do not know why, but they did. What a way of life. Right? 30 minutes of being in the freezing cold went by and I was finally at school. I looked down at my hands, which were turning black and blue. I walked up the stairs entering wildlife also known as high school. My head down, I walked quickly to my locker, trying to avoid eye contact. In my head I thought ââ¬Å"please donââ¬â¢t be there, please donââ¬â¢t be there!â⬠but there they were, ââ¬Å"the bestâ⬠, the meanest, nastiest group of all time. They are at my locker every morning, ready to give me my morning beat down. I still have the burn marks they gave me a few weeks ago. Is school not a place to feel safe? As I came to my locker, I saw the leader, the one who ran the show. Her name is Gigi. My heart began to race, my feet speed up, and I could feel the back of my neck hair stand up. I didnââ¬â¢t stop at my locker today, I didnââ¬â¢t want to get hurt, but I knew that wasnââ¬â¢t possible. A smile came to my face as I passed the group. I felt relief knowing they didnââ¬â¢t see me. As I began to slow down, I almost tripped. Well I thought I did. I couldnââ¬â¢t believe I thought I made it pass them. ââ¬Å"I thoughtâ⬠as I was cleaning up my books from the ground. Round 1 is about to start now. They dragged me to where we usually go when they beat me up. The disgusting bathroom. We walked in and they threw my books everywhere. This was my Friday beat down, which consisted of punches, slaps, and kicks. When they were finally finished, I only had a few cuts, and bruises. It wasnââ¬â¢t that bad today, but I wasnââ¬â¢t complaining. Finally, the day was over. I survived through lunc h, Iââ¬â¢m starving, but I made it. I havenââ¬â¢t eaten anything for the past two days. I usually eat whatever was left but most of the time itââ¬â¢s nothing. I am so weak itââ¬â¢s hard to do anything. I can hardly walk, and more importantly defend myself. The final bell rings and I walk as quickly as I can to avoid the rush. I decided I was going to walk home, just so I could spend a little more time away. Out into the cold I go for 30 more minutes. I would go to a friendââ¬â¢s house, but what friend do I have? As I reached my door, I could already hear the screams between my parents. It is almost four, which means mother will be leaving for work. I though school was bad with all the bruises, but itââ¬â¢s nothing compared to the abuse I get at home. When both parents are home, they yell and hit me for absolutely nothing. They live like royals and I am their servant. I never go anywhere with them, and when they do leave they lock up everything so I donââ¬â¢t get into it. I have tried suicide but I can never bring myself to do it. All the ways I thought of were too slow to

Should managers and management students study the history of Essay
Should managers and management students study the history of management from a critical perspective - Essay Example The study of the history of management is the basis upon which the entire profession set, and to deny students the opportunity to study it would also mean that the erosion of the profession has begun. Therefore, students and future managers have to study the history of management from a critical perspective because this is the only way that they can learn how to do better in their jobs. Furthermore, it is also important for a critical study of the history of the profession so that those who study it can not only be able to learn how the different theories of management evolved, but also be able to come up with better theories, which might help future managers. The study of management history from a critical perspective is immensely important for the continued development of the profession. The critical study of management history is extremely important for managers of organizations because of the fact that they get to learn how to better manage the changes that are affecting their or ganizations. It is a well known fact that in most organizations, very few changes are effectively implemented by the managers who attempt to does so, with the success rate being so low that one would say that they are negligible. The reason for these low rates of success is that there is often resistance from the employees because of the fact that the managers do not know how to address these changes before attempting to implement them. The managers of many organizations often ignore the feelings of their employees when implementing changes and when they meet resistance, they often take an antagonistic stance towards it. This is because many managers in the current generation have not had an opportunity to make a critical study of management history and attempted to learn from past management practices how to manage their employees. Many managers view resistance to change from their employees as being a way to sabotage the activities of the organization, and often take an adversaria l approach towards it. These managers are often ignorant of the history of management, because of they had been aware of it, then they would have realized from the mistakes of their predecessors that an adversarial stance against employees does not work. Therefore, it is very important for managers to critically study management history in order to be able to better manage changes within their organizations (Bedeian 2004, p.93). The era of globalization has come about so fast that many companies have come to have a hard time in keeping pace with the sudden expansion of their markets. A large number of companies have expanded worldwide, and with this expansion has come the need for them to adapt to the different cultures that they encounter. Therefore, it is important for managers to get to learn about the history of management from a critical perspective in order to be able to know how to function in different environments. The history of management from diverse sources all over the world, when studied critically, can be most enlightening for managers as well as students of management (Smith 2007, p.523). This is because of the fact that, even in management, there is the need for cultural relativism, especially now when many organizations are operating on a global scale and interacting with diverse cultures. Cultural relativism

Hezbollah(Party Of God) Terrorist organization (Lebanon) Research Paper
Hezbollah(Party Of God) Terrorist organization (Lebanon) - Research Paper Example They bore the brunt of the conflict between the Israeliââ¬â¢s and the PLO. As a result, Hezbollah was born initially as an organization and movement designed to oust the Israelââ¬â¢s and their allies from southern Lebanon. There are three main area of Lebanon that Hezbollah can operate from with relative safely. The first is the Beqaa Valley of Eastern Lebanon. This is the traditional home of most Lebanese Shia. It is an agrarian region with a high rate of poverty that borders Syria. Southern Lebanon bordering Israel is another area with a high concentration of Shia Muslims and is a safe haven for Hezbollah. The final geographic stronghold of Hezbollah is the slum area outside of Beirut. These slums grew as a result of the fighting in southern Lebanon during the Israeli invasion in the 1980ââ¬â¢s. The founder of Hezbollah was Sheik Subhi Tufaili. He was educated in Iraq and there was exposed to Islamic Revolution ideology as presented by Shiite leaders from Iran. He brought these ideas to Lebanon and used them to attract disparate Shiite groups in Lebanon. From the joining of these groups, Hezbollah was born. Internal conflicts between Subhi Tufaili caused his ouster in the early 1990ââ¬â¢s. Tufaili was upset that Hezbollah was willing to participate in elections in Lebanon. Replacing Tufaili was the current Secretary General Sheik Hassan Nasrallah. The initial purpose behind the formation of Hezbollah was the removal of Israeli troops from Lebanon. Shiite citizens were bearing the worst of the fighting from the casualties in the conflict between the PLO and the Israeliââ¬â¢s. Armed resistance to Israel and its allies was the central focus of Hezbollah from the start. Once the Israeliââ¬â¢s withdrew from Lebanon, Hezbollah began to take a more nuanced reason for their existence. They began to present themselves as an Islamist group working to spread the teachings of Islam to the world. They state that they want to show the world that Islam

Cuban revolution Essay Example for Free
Cuban revolution Essay The dual personality of doctors has been observed since ancient times. Thousands of years ago, the mythological Dr. Imhotep of Egypt had a personality similar to Robert Louis Stevensonââ¬â¢s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hydeââ¬âtwo personalities in one person. Even more recently, this has been noticed in terrorists and extremists. In 2007, for instance, 45 Muslim doctors planned US terror attacks from Britain. And just five months ago, a Fort Hood medical doctor, a psychiatrist in fact, open fired on his fellow American soldiers in the military base where he treats other soldiers. Scientists have also been known for this type of bipolar madness, such as the mad CERN scientist who was arrested seven months ago for plotting terrorism. There are hundreds of similar cases, but sometimes, these people become larger-than-life heroes, especially for the people that they fight for. One of these bipolar idols is Dr. Ernesto ââ¬Å"Cheâ⬠Guevara, a physician who is a hero, a caring person and a martyr, yet also a brutal guerilla revolutionary who left behind a legacy. Mr. Che is a hero. He is a Marxist revolutionary from Argentina who played a leading role in the Cuban revolution of the late 1950s, second in command to Fidel Castro. He is an icon in Cuba because he fought against inequality. Latin America was plagued by socio-economic inequality caused by imperialist nations such as the United States through the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Some American government officials, such as Secretary of State John Dulles, owned or worked for US corporations that exploited land and labor in Latin America. And Che felt strongly about the immorality of these dealings (Kellner 32). He strongly believed that in order to correct the inequity of the situation, only an armed struggle through a revolution could change the status quo (Sinclair 12). In a speech given in 1961, he attacked the United States, which hypocritically calls itself a ââ¬Å"democracyâ⬠while discriminating against African Americans and other minorities, physically torturing them through the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), and controlling the financial system through a few well-to-do groups of white people. By 1964, after the successful Cuban Revolution, he became a diplomat to the United Nations (UN) in New York City (Kellner 60). And in a speech to the UN, he condemned South Africa for its ââ¬Å"brutalâ⬠apartheid and challenged the UN to end the racist policy. He also attacked the United States in the UN for racial prejudice and injustice that allows whites who murder blacks to go free and prohibits African Americans from demanding their civil rights as human beings. Che was also an economic advisor to Castro, and he advised Cuba to follow the example of China to develop the Cuban industry, but Castro favored the practices of the Soviet Union and ignored Che, as asserted by John Riddell for the Centre for Research on Globalization. Had Castro followed the advice of Che, Cuba could have followed the economic success of China instead of the collapse of the Soviet Union. He also supported the communists in Vietnam and called for the development of ââ¬Å"many Vietnamsâ⬠throughout the world, in a letter written in 1967. This led him to aid communist uprisings in Congo and Bolivia. Dr. Ernesto Guevara is also a caring physician. He was asthmatic, and in 1954, he worked in the allergy department of Mexico Cityââ¬â¢s General Hospital. He also lectured about medical subjects in the National Autonomous University of Mexico. His wife, Hilda Gadea claims in her book, My Life with Che, that he wanted to work as a physician in Africa. She also mentions that he was always deeply troubled by the suffering surrounding him. One of his patients was an old laundry woman and Hilda recounts how Che was deeply saddened by her situation. He felt that she symbolized those who were exploited and neglected. He then wrote a poem and dedicated it to the elderly woman, stating that he will fight for victims of poverty and exploitation, leading to a better society. Even after the Cuban Revolution, he continued to care for the wounded and the sick. In 1960, he provided emergency medical assistance to blast victims at the Havana Harbor which killed more than 76 and injured hundreds. Moreover, Leonardo Tamayo, who fought alongside Che said that he was like a father to him. He was his teacher. But the ââ¬Å"most beautiful thingâ⬠that Che taught him was ââ¬Å"to be humanâ⬠(Schweimler, BBC News). Also, when Che was fighting in the Congo, he needed an interpreter to translate Swahili and other local African dialects for him. The teenager, Freddy Ilanga, became his translator, and over time, Ilangaââ¬â¢s admiration for Che grew due to his hard-working nature and his equal respect for blacks and whites (Doyle, BBC World Affairs). And in preparation for his death, he wrote a farewell letter to his children, five all in all, which was to be read when he passes away. It taught them to be sensitive to the injustices committed against humanity around the globe. This sensitivity, he says, is the revolutionaryââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"most beautifulâ⬠feature (Guevara 167). Mr. Che is also a martyr. His actions always suggested self-sacrifice, and he was a man who was always ready to die for his cause. For instance, he risked his own life to save Joel Iglesias, his lieutenant. With his gun tucked through his belt, he darted to the wounded Iglesias and carried him on his shoulders. The guards saw him, but they did not shoot him because they were so impressed with his act of martyrdom (Landau X01). Furthermore, after a frustrating ordeal fighting in the Congo, he wanted to send back his surviving Cuban companions back home and fight by himself, like the Lone Ranger, since some of his comrades already died. But Castro sent two representatives to convince him to come back since it was not yet his time to be a martyr. And since Che thought that there was ââ¬Å"nothingâ⬠more to do in the Congo because the leaders were ââ¬Å"corruptâ⬠and had no passion to fight, he complied with Castro and retreated (Kellner 87). But he knew that one day, it will be over for him, so he already prepared for his coming death by writing his own epitaph. In it, he welcomes death, as long as someone else continues the fight against inequality and injustice (Bourne, The Guardian). He also believed that his death would become a type of ââ¬Å"renaissanceâ⬠that would bring forth ââ¬Å"renewalâ⬠or ââ¬Å"rebirthâ⬠(Nadle 42). Just before his enemies killed him, they asked Che if his own immortality was in his thoughts, but he said that he only reflected on the revolutionââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"immortality,â⬠as Time magazine reports. Eventually, he was executed. But when his corpse was displayed to the local public, many of them thought that his body seemed like Christââ¬â¢s, so some of them clipped locks of Cheââ¬â¢s hair as holy relics (Casey 179). Indeed, after John Berger, an art critic, saw photographs of his cadaver, he realized that it resembled Mantegnaââ¬â¢s painting of Christ after he died (Casey 183). In the end, some Bolivian farm laborers consecrated Che and called him St. Ernesto. They pray to him for their daily needs (Schipani, The Observer). Mr. Che is also a brutal guerilla revolutionary. After joining, Fidel Castroââ¬â¢s July 26 Movement, he was trained by Colonel Alberto Bayo in guerilla warfare even though Che was planning to be a medic. He learned ambush-retreat techniques, running through rivers and jungles, and hiking up mountains. He graduated as the top guerilla of his class, and he made a great impression on the colonel (Kellner 37). But after their invasion of Cuba via a sea route from Mexico, the Cuban government under Batista attacked them heavily. When his comrades started running away, he dropped his medical supplies and started arming himself to fight. Eventually, Che would become a commandant second only to Fidel Castro. He did not tolerate cowardice, so anyone who wanted to run away to the enemy, or accept bribes in return for information, or simply pretended to work for their movement while actually working for the enemy, were all considered to be venomous traitors and were all brutally slaughtered at the command of Che. He would send squads to hunt down and kill traitors; summary executions were also not uncommon (Anderson 237). In one instance, when it became ââ¬Å"uncomfortableâ⬠for the people to execute Eutimio Guerra, a convicted informant, Che himself shot him through the head in a detached manner, later writing about it as a sacrifice that was necessary for ââ¬Å"redemptionâ⬠(Anderson 237). He and his men were also outnumbered 10 to 1 in their battle for the control of Cuba, but in spite of this handicap, they were able to capture Havana and win Cuba, a ââ¬Å"remarkableâ⬠feat, as told by some observers (Sandison 39). But to this day, many Cuban Americans and exiles hate him and consider him to be a ââ¬Å"butcherâ⬠(Casey 325). However, even with his negative record, Dr. Ernesto ââ¬Å"Cheâ⬠Guevara has left behind a legacy. His name is on the list of Time magazine as one of the most influential personalities of the previous century. Nelson Mandela also calls him the freedom-loverââ¬â¢s inspiration (Guevarra, II), while Jean-Paul Sartre thinks of him as todayââ¬â¢s intelligent and ââ¬Å"complete humanâ⬠personality (Moynihan, Stockholm Spectator). The Black Panthers also believe that Guevara lives on through his ideals (Sinclair 67). Truly, a bronze statue of Cheââ¬â¢s likeness stands 12 feet high in Argentina, where many high schools and museums are named in memory of him and his principles (Popper, Reuters). Furthermore, Cuban children pledge to follow him every morning, while his face is immortalized on Cuban currency (Peoples Weekly World). A photo of him taken by Alberto Korda is a popular icon among counter-culture groups and modern merchandising (Lacey, The New York Times). It would not be unusual for someone nowadays to wear a hat, T-shirt, bikini or tattoo of this iconic photograph with Che gazing up to the left, like a saint, appearing Christ-like with a trimmed mustache and beard; his long wavy hair is covered by a beret bearing a five-pointed star at the center. Indeed, the five-pointed star or the Wu Xing, as the Chinese call it, is a very apt symbol for the justice and equality that Guevara stood for. As Rodney St. Michael states in Sync My World: Thiefââ¬â¢s Honor GA SK, the five-pointed star is a universal political symbol that stands for the multi-polar conflict and harmony between the five basic Selves, races, genders, classes, organizations, nations and so forth. In the end, while Dr. Ernesto ââ¬Å"Cheâ⬠Guevara had five facesââ¬âa hero, a compassionate doctor, a saint, a vicious revolutionary and an iconic legendââ¬âhis multi-faceted personality allowed him to become a very influential leader who still lives in the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world. He is truly a five-star icon. Works Cited Anderson, Jon Lee. Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life. New York: Grove Press, 1997. Bourne, Richard. Obituary: Che Guevara, Marxist Architect of Revolution. The Dangers of Living with an Eating Disorder Essay -- Health Eating D
The Dangers of Living with an Eating Disorder Imagine waking up every morning, struggling to get out of bed. The room spins. Stumbling over to the mirror, you study and criticize every last inch of your body as the words ââ¬Å"fat, ugly, worthlessâ⬠echo in your head. You then stagger to the bathroom, using the wall to hold you up. You donââ¬â¢t remember the last time you ate a ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠meal. Stepping on the scale will determine your mood for the day. If it has decreased since yesterday, you have succeeded; if it has stayed the same, or worse, gone up, those voices inside your head become stronger, telling you how useless you are. Throughout your day, you skip meals and avoid food at all costs, or binge on whatever food is in sight and secretly purge in bathrooms where nobody can hear you. Or like many women in this country, you flip-flop between both of these behaviors. For approximately seven million American women, this is their reality. This is the life of a woman with an eating disorder. ââ¬Å"I needed to lose weightâ⬠¦fast,â⬠said 18-year-old Liss of Boston. ââ¬Å"So I started counting calories, and then counting meals, and then counting pounds, and then inches. I had lost 20 pounds in one month. Not too shabby I thought to myself. The weight loss became an obsession and it took over.â⬠Lissââ¬â¢s story is all too common. What begins as a diet to ââ¬Å"lose a few poundsâ⬠becomes an obsession. Young women across the country become fixated with numbers on the scale, numbers of calories, fat, carbohydrates, inches, etc. The two most dangerous eating disorders are bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. Bulimia is characterized as a disorder in which a person binges on large amounts of food, well past the point of fullness, and then purge... ...r because they feel as if their eating disorder defines them; they are nothing without it. ââ¬Å"Ed wants you to think that he is your identity,â⬠Schaefer said. ââ¬Å"But that is a lie; you are not your eating disorder. You are [you]. He tells you that he is what makes you special.â⬠Schaefer admits that she also believed that her eating disorder defined her at one point in her life as well. However, she then went on to learn that all it caused was ââ¬Å"excruciating pain.â⬠ââ¬Å"Treating my eating disorder like relationship, not a condition or an illness, really worked for me,â⬠Schaefer said. Schaefer also suggests journal writing and being surrounded with good supports. ââ¬Å"In recovery, it was difficult to connect with Jenni at first,â⬠Schaefer said. ââ¬Å"But with lots of patience and persistence, I eventually found her, and I am thrilled to now be living a life without Ed.ââ¬

H. L. A. Hartââ¬â¢s concept of legal positivism was heavily influenced by Austin. However, he breaks with Austinian positivism at three vital junctures. First, he believed that the sovereign law giver is defined by his office rather than being a person who has secured the habit of obedience. Second authority is vested in rule of recognition instead of through the threat sanctions. Finally, Hart believed that laws expand liberty rather than limit it. In a nutshell Hartââ¬â¢s Philosophy of Law builds upon the Command Law Theory established by Austin, corrects its errors and establishes its own doctrines. In his essay ââ¬Å"Sovereign and Subjectâ⬠, Hart proposed that the habit of obedience does not account for the relationship between subject and sovereign. This inclination to, or habit of obedience, propounded by Austin, asserts that there exists a relationship between a subject and his sovereign. Where this relationship exists we speak of a society. However, since the habit of obedience is a habit backed by threats, it differs little from the idea a gunman coercing a person to give him his purse. Hart opines that a lawââ¬â¢s validity does not depend on the existence of social rules. Instead laws exist to promote social order. Hart contributes his conceptual analysis theory to jurisprudence of legal formalism. He postulates that jurisprudence aims to give analysis of the uses to which the concept of law is put in various social practices. Given that all rules have a penumbra of uncertainty, a judge must often choose between alternatives. Simply put, Hart takes legal thought beyond the simplistic Command Theory. To him a law can be valid despite its moral invalidity and sans any coercion backed by threats. Such views on the law can be seen today in the USA Patriot Act. This is morally reprehensible because of the many provisions that potentially violate citizensââ¬â¢ rights. However it is still a valid law promoting the security of American society at large. As a legal naturalist Ronald Dworkin rejects positivism. His chief objection is that moral principles can be binding by virtue of the fact that they express an appropriate dimension of justice and fairness. He espouses the belief that in interpreting the meaning of valid legal rules, it is often necessary to consult moral principles. Curiously, a posthumous edition of Hartââ¬â¢s seminal A Concept of Law gives space to Hartââ¬â¢s response to Dworkinââ¬â¢s criticism of Legal Positivism. In contrast to Hart, Dworkin believes that law is not simply a matter of rules. Moral principles are law even if they are not identified under the rule of recognition. Moral principles can also be said to be law because they have dimensions of justice. As opposed to Hart, Dworkinââ¬â¢s theory on jurisprudence is that judges appeal to binding legal standards that are more discretionary than hard and fast rules. An example is the gravamen of guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Instead of simply relying on their discretion, a judge uses jurisprudence to form a body of as yet unwritten legal standards to back up their decisions. To summarize, Dworkin champions the cause of Legal Naturalism: that laws must appeal to morality to have legal validity. Many of todayââ¬â¢s penal laws can be said to espouse Legal Naturalism.

Quotes From Women Historians Women Writing About History
Some quotes from women known as historians: Gerda Lerner, considered to be the founding mother of the discipline of womens history wrote, Women have always made history as much as men have, not contributed to it, only they did not know what they had made and had no tools to interpret their own experience. Whats new at this time is that women are fully claiming their past and shaping the tools by means of which they can interpret it.Moreà Gerda Lerner Quotes Mary Ritter Beard, who wrote about womens history earlier in the 20th century before womens history was an accepted field, wrote: The dogma of womans complete historical subjection to men must be rated as one of the most fantastic myths ever created by the human mind.Moreà Mary Ritter Beard Quotes The first woman we know to have written a history wasà Anna Comnena, a Byzantine princess who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries. She wrote theà Alexiad, a 15-volume history of her fathers accomplishments -- with some medicine and astronomy -- included as well -- and also including the accomplishments of a number of women. Alice Morse Earleà is an almost-forgotten 19th century writer about Puritan history; because she wrote for children and because her work is heavy with moral lessons, she is virtually forgotten today as an historian. Her focus on ordinary life foreshadows ideas later common in the discipline of womens history. In all the Puritan meetings, as then and now in Quaker meetings, the men sat on one side of the meeting-house and the women on the other; and they entered by separate doors. It was a great and much-contested change when men and women were ordered to sit together promiscuoslie. - Alice Morse Earle Aparna Basu, who studies womens history at the University of New Delhi, wrote: History is no longer just a chronicle of kings and statesmen, of people who wielded power, but of ordinary women and men engaged in manifold tasks. Womens history is an assertion that women have a history. There are today many women historians, academic and popular, who write about womens history and about history in general. Venezuelaââ¬â¢s Declaration of Independence in 1810
The republic of Venezuela celebrates its independence from Spain on two different dates: April 19, when an initial declaration of semi-independence from Spain was signed in 1810, and July 5, when a more definitive break was signed in 1811. April 19 is known as ââ¬Å"Firma Acta de la Independenciaâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Signing of the Act of Independence.â⬠Napoleon Invades Spain The first years of the nineteenth century were turbulent ones in Europe, particularly in Spain. In 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain and put his brother Joseph on the throne, throwing Spain and its colonies into chaos. Many Spanish colonies, still loyal to the deposed King Ferdinand, did not know how to react to the new ruler. Some cities and regions opted for a limited independence: they would take care of their own affairs until such time as Ferdinand was restored. Venezuela: Ready for Independence Venezuela was ripe for Independence long before other South American regions. Venezuelan Patriot Francisco de Miranda, a former general in the French Revolution, led a failed attempt to start a revolution in Venezuela in 1806, but many approved of his actions. Young firebrand leaders like Simà ³n Bolà var and Josà © Fà ©lix Ribas were actively speaking of making a clean break from Spain. The example of the American Revolution was fresh in the minds of these young patriots, who wanted freedom and their own republic. Napoleonic Spain and the Colonies In January of 1809, a representative of the Joseph Bonaparte government arrived in Caracas and demanded that taxes continue to be paid and that the colony recognize Joseph as their monarch. Caracas, predictably, exploded: people took to the streets declaring loyalty to Ferdinand. A ruling junta was proclaimed and Juan de Las Casas, the Captain-General of Venezuela, was deposed. When news reached Caracas that a loyalist Spanish government had been set up in Seville in defiance of Napoleon, things cooled down for a while and Las Casas was able to re-establish control. April 19, 1810 On April 17, 1810, however, news reached Caracas that the government loyal to Ferdinand had been crushed by Napoleon. The city erupted into chaos once more. Patriots who favored full independence and royalists loyal to Ferdinand could agree on one thing: they would not tolerate French rule. On April 19, Creole patriots confronted the new Captain-General Vicente Emparà ¡n and demanded self-rule. Emparà ¡n was stripped of authority and sent back to Spain. Josà © Fà ©lix Ribas, a wealthy young patriot, rode through Caracas, exhorting Creole leaders to come to the meeting taking place in the council chambers. Provisional Independence The elite of Caracas agreed on a provisional independence from Spain: they were rebelling against Joseph Bonaparte, not the Spanish crown, and would mind their own affairs until Ferdinand VII was restored. Still, they made some quick decisions: they outlawed slavery, exempted Indians from paying tribute, reduced or removed trade barriers, and decided to send envoys to the United States and Britain. Wealthy young nobleman Simà ³n Bolà var financed the mission to London. Legacy of the April 19 Movement The result of the Act of Independence was immediate. All over Venezuela, cities and towns decided either to follow Caracas lead or not: many cities chose to remain under Spanish rule. This led to fighting and a de facto Civil War in Venezuela. A Congress was called in early 1811 to solve the bitter fighting among Venezuelans. Although it was nominally loyal to Ferdinand - the official name of the ruling junta was Junta of conservation of the rights of Ferdinand VII - the government of Caracas was, in fact, quite independent. It refused to recognize the Spanish shadow government that was loyal to Ferdinand, and many Spanish officers, bureaucrats, and judges were sent back to Spain along with Emparà ¡n. Meanwhile, exiled patriot leader Francisco de Miranda returned, and young radicals such as Simà ³n Bolà var, who favored unconditional independence, gained influence. On July 5, 1811, the ruling junta voted in favor of complete Independence from Spain - their self-rule was no longer dependent on the state of the Spanish king. Thus was born the ââ¬â¹First Venezuelan Republic, doomed to die in 1812 after a disastrous earthquake and relentless military pressure from royalist forces. The April 19 pronouncement was not the first of its kind in Latin America: the city of Quito had made a similar pronouncement in August of 1809. Still, the independence of Caracas had much longer lasting effects than that of Quito, which was quickly put down. It allowed the return of the charismatic Francisco de Miranda, vaulted Simà ³n Bolà var, Josà © Fà ©lix Ribas and other patriot leaders to fame, and set the stage for the true independence that followed. It also inadvertently caused the death of Simà ³n Bolà vars brother Juan Vicente, who died in a shipwreck while returning from a diplomatic mission to the USA in 1811. Sources: Harvey, Robert. Free Will Essay - 2309 Words
Many people in the western world hold very dear the idea of independence, that they can think freely, choose freely, and express themselves freely. This all is connected to the idea of free will that many believe is what makes us human. Many people cannot, however, define free will. There is always the feeling that one can do whatever he/she wants. That is probably why this idea is such a pleasing concept. There is just one serious flaw in the free will concept. People cannot determine everything; there are some things, even before one is born, that determines who he will be in the future. Since people do not choose their parents, or the nationality of their family this creates a serious flaw in the free will concept. Now if people wereâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦On another note, the Qurââ¬â¢an is often wrongly interpreted as being based on determinism. This is false; if a life of a Muslim was determined for him/her at birth there would be no point in him/her trying to find out the nature of his sin, Allah would not have had to send prophets to teach his people the way, because all their actions would be already determined by them (Gorjian 2010). This suggests that, as far a religion goes people are free to do as they feel is right. This however does not justify the fact that governments take away this freedom from their citizens. Governments taking away freedom from their subjects can be traced back in history, and one the greatest examples for this would be the war of ideologies known as World War II. Political systems are based on ideas like fascism which helped Germans in their economic crisis, communism overthrew the Tzars in Russia which gave the proletariat all the influence they needed, while liberalism promised freedom. This all seems perfect, however, as it is all well known, there were flaws in each of those systems. Nazis under Hitler were only nice to a great portion of Germans as they were trying to create the master race. All others: Slavs, Roma, Jews were hated and discriminated against. In occupied Poland Nazis closed schools, denied access to education, confiscated automobiles, (Cosby 2010) houses, land and riches.Show MoreRelatedEssay On Free Is Not Free1887 Words à |à 8 Pagesmight never know precisely but we can assume that as photos and videos constitute for the most part in terms of data storage. Agrarian Discontent In The Late 1800s Essay Example For Students
Agrarian Discontent In The Late 1800s Essay Word Count: 1535Why the Farmers Were WrongThe period between 1880 and 1900 was a boom time for American politics. The country was for once free of the threat of war, and many of its citizens were living comfortably. However, as these two decades went by, the American farmer found it harder and harder to live comfortably. Crops such as cotton and wheat, once the bulwark of agriculture, were selling at prices so low that it was nearly impossible for farmers to make a profit off them. Furthermore, improvement in transportation allowed foreign competition to materialize, making it harder for American farmers to dispose of surplus crop. Finally, years of drought in the midwest and the downward spiral of business in the 1890s devastated many of the nations farmers. As a result of the agricultural depression, many farm groups, most notably the Populist Party, arose to fight what farmers saw as the reasons for the decline in agriculture. During the last twenty years of the nineteenth century, many farmers in the United States saw monopolies and trusts, railroads, and money shortages and the demonetization of silver as threats to their way of life, though in many cases their complaints were not valid. The growth of the railroad was one of the most significant elements in American economic growth. However, in many ways, the railroads hurt small shippers and farmers. Extreme competition between rail companies necessitated some way to win business. To do this, many railroads offered rebates and drawbacks to larger shippers who used their rails. However, this practice hurt smaller shippers, including farmers, for often times railroad companies would charge more to ship products short distances than they would for long trips. The rail companies justified this practice by asserting that if they did not rebate, they would not make enough profit to stay in business. In his testimony to the Senate Cullom Committee, George W. Parker stated, the operating expense of this roadrequires a certain volume of business to meet these fixed expenses.in some seasons of the year, the local business of the roadis not sufficient to make the earningswhen we make up a train of ten of fifteen cars of local freightwe can attach fifteen or twenty carsof strictly through business. We can take the latter at a very low rate than go without it. Later, when asked the consequences of charging local traffic the same rate as through freight, Mr. Parker responded, Bankruptcy, inevitably and speedy. While the railroads felt that they must use this practice to make a profit, the farmers were justified in complaining, for they were seriously injured by it. A perfect example of this fact can be found in The Octopus by Frank Norris. A farmer named Dyke discovers that the railroad has increased their freight charges from two to five cents a pound. This new rate, ate up every cent of his gains. He stood there ruined. (Doc. H). The railroads regularly used rebates and drawbacks to help win the business of large shippers, and made up this loss in profit by increasing the cost to smaller shippers such as farmers. As a result, many farmers, already hurt by the downslide in agriculture, were ruined. Thus, t he farmers of the late nineteenth century had a valid complaint against railroad shippers, for these farmers were hurt by the unfair practices of the railroads. Near the end of the nineteenth century, business began to centralize, leading to the rise of monopolies and trusts. Falling prices, along with the need for better efficiency in industry, led to the rise of such companies as Carnegie Steel and Standard Oil, which controlled a majority of the nations supply of raw steel and oil respectively. The rise of these monopolies and trusts concerned many farmers, for they felt that the disappearance of competition would lead to erratic and unreasonable price rises that would hurt consumers. James B. Weaver, the Populist partys presidential candidate in the 1892 election, summed up the feelings of many Americans of the period in his work, A Call to Action: An Interpretation of the Great Uprising. He wrote, It is clear that trusts arein conflict with the Common law. They are monopolies organized to destroy competition and restrain trade. Once they secure control of a given line, they are master of the situation They can limit the price of the raw material so as to impoverish the producer, drive him to a single market, reduce the price of every class of labor connected with the trade, throw out of employment large numbers personsand finallythey increase the price to the consumer. The main weapons of the trust are threats, intimidation, bribery, fraud, wreck, and pillage. However, the facts refute many of Weavers charges against the monopolies. While it is true that many used questionable means to achieve their monopoly, many were not out to crush competitors. To the contrary, John D. Rockefeller, head of Standard Oil, competed ruthlessly not to crush other refiners but to persuade them to join Standard Oil and share the business so all could profit. Furthermore, the fear that the monopolies would raise prices unreasonably was never realized. Prices tended to fall during the latter part of the 1800s creating what some have called a consumers millennium. Thus, the agrarian complaints against monopolies were not incredibly vali d, for the monopolies did very little harm to farmers of the time. .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd , .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .postImageUrl , .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd , .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:hover , .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:visited , .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:active { border:0!important; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:active , .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u241761bb84152abb47c1bac831d30efd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Consequences Of Guns EssayFinally, deflation and falling prices during the late 1800s led to the most heated complaint of farmers and the Populist party that grew out of agricultural discontent. Deflation had been running rampant during the latter half of the 1800s, as evidenced by the drastic fall in the value of wheat and cotton. To fight the deflationary trend, the Populists demanded a reversal of the Coinage Act of 1873, which demonetized silver. The Populist platform for the 1892 election called for unlimited coinage of silver and an increase in the money supply to no less than $50 per capita.. Here again, the farmers are wrong in the assessment of their problems. It is true that the countrys money supply was not adequate. United States government data from 1961 shows that though the countrys population between 1865 and 1875 increased by nearly four million, the countrys money supply actually decreased. However, many farmers used the money supply to explain problems that indeed had very little to do with the money supply at all. This fact is best summed up in a quote from J. Laurence Laughlins article, Causes of Agricultural Unrest. He says, Feeling the coils of some mysterious power about them, the farmers have attributed their misfortunes to the constriction in prices, caused, as they think, not by an increased production of wheat throughout the world, but by the scarcity of gold.. Furthermore, history has shown that battle between gold and silver had little real meaning. The real battle was not between gold or silver, but instead what would be done to check deflation. William McKinley, in his 1896 acceptance speech, said, Free silver woul d not mean that silver dollars were to be freely had without cost or labor It would not make labor easier, the hours shorter, or the pay better. It would not make the farming less laborious or more profitable. Many farmers saw silver as a cure-all for their problems, failing to see that changes in the world were to blame. Finally, the discovery of gold in Alaska and improved methods of extracting gold from low-grade ore did much to increase the nations money supply. These facts prove that the farmers view of silver was not sound, thus invalidating their complaints about the nations financial system. The farmers of the late 1800s had many reasons for being dissatisfied with their situation. Unfair railroad practices, such as rebates and drawbacks, hurt them severely. However, in some cases, these farmers complaints were not justified. Many of the fears that farmers had about monopolies, such as the idea of unfair and unreasonable price increases, happened in very few occasions; in fact, prices went down in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Finally, history has proven that their view of silver as a way to end deflation and the decrease in crop values was inaccurate. The farmers of the period, though, used these issues to change the shape of American politics and bring it face to face with the problems the country was facing.

Technology and Online Assessments
Abstract The world is embracing the use of technology to improve education at a very fast rate. Employers are now turning to the use of testing software to carry out staff recruitment exercises and for a long time, professional bodies have been using online testing software to test candidates. Online assessment methods are now also being implemented by educational establishments to assist in guiding students from early ages of schooling.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Technology and Online Assessments specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This paper looks at the role played by technology in the education field and more especially, in the area of assessment. Specifically, two online assessment tools; Scantron Performance Series and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), are discussed. Introduction The quest for accountability in the education system and the desire to ensure that students are taught well has continued to grow over time. This has driven stakeholders to start considering alternatives to guide the teaching process for the good of both the teacher and the student. Educators are faced with a tough challenge to come up with innovative ways that guarantee the success of the education system besides ensuring that they are able to perform to the expectations of the public. Review and Literature Generally, the goal of any education system is to create of a healthy learning environment that provides the students with the opportunity to successfully learn and develop to their full potential. The key hurdle to deal with here is the huge variation that often is noticeable among students in terms of learning abilities. While others are perceived to be fast learners, some tend to be slow and require some special treatment and a lot of patience, understanding and support to enable them benefit from the entire learning process. The traditional approach to teaching req uires the teacher to use his/her own intuition to make judgment about the studentsââ¬â¢ abilities. While this might help especially is the teacher has the interests of the student at heart, more often than not it is flawed and leaves a lot to be desired.Advertising Looking for research paper on education? As a result, slow and poor performing students receive a very unfair treatment. The need to use improved assessment tools arose from the fact that teachers wanted to have faster, reliable ways of evaluating students so as to identify the challenges faced by the students in good time to be able to rescue them from any difficulty faced. Good feedback received within a reasonable time will help the teacher to know a studentââ¬â¢s we akness and offer the appropriate form of support. Initially, very rudimentary methods were used to accomplish this very important step of the learning process. Teachers would have to carry out the assessment manually and since every stage of the entire process is manual, too much time has to be taken process and give the results. In most cases, feedback would come in very late for the teacher to use to address the studentââ¬â¢s difficulty. Education officials then figured out that there was need to improve the assessment approach and make the whole education system relevant to the needs of the society. One development in this area was introducing the use of computers and palm handheld devices. These devices provide a means to quickly be able to evaluate students and with the outcome of the testing being received almost instantaneously, the process of helping the students becomes easy and reliable. Needless to mention that this has led to a great improvement in the way students ar e taught in school. With the hand held devices and computers teachers are able to set benchmarks used not only to gauge the studentsââ¬â¢ performance, but also identify areas where the teachers need improvement. Eventually, we have teachers who are self aware and well placed to make positive contributions. In view of the above challenges, and the benefits brought about by the use of technology, the use of online assessment has continued to gain popularity.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Technology and Online Assessments specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Technology is proving to be very useful as an aid for the teachers. Both teachers and students are able to see their weaknesses and do what they can to make improvements. Teachers are able to see areas where their students need help. The idea has been widely accepted and technology is now being applied in numerous learning situations. A number of onli ne testing solutions exist that are meant to help create a difference in the way the educators run their programs. Among the solutions are Scantron and DIBELS. These tools have significantly reformed the way teachers gauge student performance. They are discussed further below. Scantron Performance Assessment This was developed by Scantron Corporation and it uses a computer adaptive system to test students. Tests are designed in such that they can allow the maximum possible time required for a student to complete a test. Each student being tested gets a unique test and depending on how the student answers a question, the next question could get more or less difficult. Scantron performance assessment program comes with a backup system in place that guarantees recovery to the point when problems were encountered. Students taking the test are therefore not worried about any interruptions occurring while they are still taking the exam. The Scantron system is however, not without a negati ve side. Young students find themselves in difficulties and get confused when using the system. This means that the students have to be well trained to take advantage of the system. Students without computer skills are also greatly disadvantaged when it comes to using the system. Another noticeable danger is that teachers may end up delegating the teaching process. Due to the adaptive nature of the test some students may complete a test within a shorter time when others take a longer duration. Slow paced students who see their peers finishing early could easily get discouraged. According to SPSTR (2010), given the fact that a teacher might be required to supervise a huge number of students taking a test and with the examinees probably sitting close to one another, the test integrity is also questionable. It is therefore important that students are warned against sharing answers with peers Again.Advertising Looking for research paper on education? Let's see if we can help you! The method uses benchmark goals that can be used by educators to check the progress of all students. The benchmarks are set by using well researched indicators (University of Oregon, 2008). The method offers great help in identifying students experiencing difficulties in the learning process. Furthermore, proper usage of the system can also provide a good basis for measuring the effectiveness of the student support system. Data collected can be used to identify students who are making progress in their learning process as well as those having challenges. Teachers are also able to interact and share ideas using the program. The test results of the DIBELS program can be used as indicators of how well a student is able to learn. By using the scores, an ed ucator can tell if a student is doing fine or if they need support (Dessoff, 2007). A concern for critics of the DIBELS program is the use of words made up including some that do not make sense to test the studentââ¬â¢s reading ability. To some, this does not make sense at all. Others are strongly opposed to the idea of timing the DIBELS test and advocate for students being let to read at their own pace. (Dessoff, 2007). Conclusion Despite being considered disruptive especially for starters, and also being looked at as taking up teachers valuable teaching time, the use of technology in education has brought in major advancements. An efficient use of technological advancements will no doubt radically transform the education system to the benefit of the entire public. Unlike the traditional manual approach, we are presented with faster ways to carry out assessments as well as great feedback on studentsââ¬â¢ progress. We, however, must be very careful not to let technological ass essments to be the ultimate solution. Though credible to a larger extent, the results obtained may not always be reliable.
